Finding the Right Therapist in Ottawa: What to Look For

Typing "therapist near me" or "psychotherapist Ottawa" into a search bar can feel oddly overwhelming. Page after page of names, credentials, and specialties, with no real way to know who's actually going to be a good fit for you. After 25 years in this field, here's what I'd tell a friend to actually pay attention to.

Credentials matter, but they're only the starting point

In Ontario, look for a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) who is a member in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). That tells you they're qualified, insured, and accountable to a professional college. But credentials only tell you someone is safe to work with, not whether they're the right person for you.

Fit matters more than a perfect resume

The single biggest predictor of whether therapy actually helps is the relationship between you and your therapist. A therapist with the "perfect" specialty on paper isn't much use if you don't feel comfortable being honest with them. Pay attention to how you feel after a first conversation: heard, respected, and at ease, or rushed and misunderstood. Trust that.

Specialization for your specific concern

General practice therapists can help with a lot, but if you're dealing with something specific, like supporting a child with ADHD or autism, working through anxiety, or navigating a major life transition, it's worth asking directly whether a therapist has experience in that area.

The practical stuff

If the first person isn't the right fit, that's normal

At Success in Steps, we work as a team of clinicians with different backgrounds and styles specifically because one person isn't the right fit for everyone. If you reach out and I'm not the best match, I'll help point you toward one of our associate clinicians instead. There's no cost and no obligation to simply have that first conversation.
