"Is what I'm going through actually bad enough for therapy?" It's one of the most common questions I hear, usually asked quietly, almost apologetically, by people who have been carrying something for a long time before they ever reach out. If you're asking yourself this right now, I want to offer a simple reframe: you don't need to hit a crisis point to justify getting support. Therapy isn't reserved for emergencies. It's for anyone who wants to feel more like themselves.
That said, there are some fairly reliable signs that it might be time to talk to someone. None of these on their own means something is "wrong" with you, but if a few of them sound familiar, it's worth paying attention to.
Signs it might be time
- What you're feeling is interfering with daily life. Work, sleep, relationships, or things you used to enjoy are being affected by anxiety, low mood, or stress.
- You feel stuck. You've tried to think or talk your way through it, and you keep landing in the same place.
- You're leaning on something to cope that worries you. That might be alcohol, overworking, avoidance, or anything else that helps in the moment but doesn't actually resolve what's underneath it.
- People close to you have mentioned a change. Sometimes the people who love us notice a shift before we're ready to name it ourselves.
- You're going through a major transition. A new baby, a diagnosis, a separation, a career change, a loss. Big life changes deserve support, not just endurance.
- You just want a space that's entirely yours. Sometimes there's no single "problem," just a wish for somewhere private and unbiased to think out loud.
If any of this resonates, that's enough of a reason. You don't need a diagnosis, a crisis, or anyone else's permission to reach out.

If you've made it this far into this post, some part of you is already wondering. That's usually worth listening to.
